MCS is partnering with Healthy Kids & Teens, Healthy Memphis Common Table, and other Community Partners on a new Initiative deemed the “Walking School Bus Day” Wednesday October 7, 2009 to highlight the National Children’s Health Month and International Walk Day. This event is part of an ongoing initiative conducted by Memphis City Schools which is Healthy Choices Week. Through Healthy Choices Week, Memphis City Schools (MCS) is taking the lead on community health issues by equipping students and partners throughout the city with resources to make healthier life choices. Healthy Choices Week began in 2005 as Memphis City Schools' charge to put our Mid-South community on a path to better health. This successful campaign has drawn a wide range of community attention and support for healthy eating and exercise habits, safe sexual behaviors and positive relationships that deter students from the unhealthy choices that plague our community. The year-long awareness campaign culminates in December with a full week of fun, learning and community activities designed to celebrate and inspire healthier living in Memphis. We hope to build on the momentum of this annual campaign by working every school and teaming up with numerous community agencies to inform and promote the benefits of daily exercise for students, parents, neighbors, and staff. By declaring Wednesday October 7th, 2009 as "Walking School Bus Day" for our community, we take positive and strong steps to improving the health of all Memphians. This is the beginning of an ongoing endeavor to increase walking days for students throughout the school year.
