Instructions for Filling Out the Online Principal/Assistant Principal Application

INSTRUCTIONS

For your convenience, an on-line application is available for candidates seeking Principal and Assistant Principal positions with Memphis City Schools. It may be helpful to have your resume and transcripts on hand as you complete the application.

The minimum browser requirement for this online application is the Internet Explorer 5.5 and Netscape Navigator 6.2.

You will be required to provide three professional references and to upload your resume and personal statement. One of the references listed must be your current supervisor. A resume and personal statement must be created in a separate program and saved in Word (.doc), Adobe (.pdf) or Text (.txt) format.


Please note: You can save your unfinished application to complete at a later time, but once you submit it, you can only change your contact information. Your application has been successfully submitted when you receive a confirmation response along with a confirmation number.

Online Application
Minimum Requirements
School Principal applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in supervision and educational administration or curriculum and instruction.
  2. Tennessee Beginning Administrator (BAL) or Professional Administrator (PAL) license or record of application
  3. Three years experience as an Assistant Principal or other comparable leadership experience
  4. Evidence of relevant leadership experience
  5. Evidence of strong communication skills
  6. Evidence of relevant training and professional development

Assistant Principal applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in supervision and educational administration or curriculum and instruction.
  2. Tennessee Beginning Administrator (BAL) or Professional Administrator (PAL) license or record of application
  3. Five years successful experience as a teacher or teacher leader or other comparable leadership experience
  4. Evidence of relevant leadership experience
  5. Evidence of strong communication skills
  6. Evidence of relevant training and professional development

Application Form
Please note that the "*" (asterisk) indicates required fields. Other information though optional is preferred. Please enter information for the Institution from which you graduated and received your bachelor’s degree in the space marked Undergraduate 1. Any other Institution(s) attended should be listed in Undergraduate 2 and/or Undergraduate 3. All Institutions do not need to be chronologically ordered; however, the Institution from which you graduated and received your degree must be listed in the first section.

Personal Statement
The personal statement should be 750 - 1,500 words in length, addressing the following four questions.

  1. Describe your most rewarding leadership experience.
  2. Describe specifically how your knowledge and past experiences have helped urban students succeed.
  3. Describe specifically how you have demonstrated leadership in your current or previous positions.
  4. Describe a situation where you successfully convinced others to implement a new procedure/program that was initially met with resistance.

This personal statement provides us with information not captured elsewhere in the application. We use the personal statement to evaluate your writing and critical thinking skills and to gain a sense of your ability to serve as a school leader. Please do not send generic personal statements.

Resume
Please attach a current resume. Starting with your most recent position, please list your positions of employment. You should include self-employment, internships, part-time jobs and other paid positions. Please describe your responsibilities for each position.

Review your application information carefully before selecting this option. ** ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MIDNIGHT ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2007.

Reference Check
A reference check form must be completed and submitted to the three professional references listed on your application.  The three individuals identified must have first hand knowledge of your leadership skills.  At least one completed reference check form (preferably from your current supervisor) must be submitted to the Department of Human Resources Attn: Sheila in order for your application to be considered complete.  Information from the reference checks will be used when evaluating your overall application.  REFERENCE CHECK FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2007.

Transcript and License
If invited to an interview, applicants will be asked to bring copies of all transcripts and licenses (official or unofficial) to the interview day as part of their interview materials. We will need transcripts and licenses for every university/college you have attended or any program that granted college credit (including high school programs and AP courses, etc.) Please DO NOT mail or fax transcripts or licenses to the district office.
