Let’s Go! The 2007-08
school year begins on
Monday, August 13, and Memphis City Schools is ready
to welcome students and parents to another exciting,
success-filled year. Memphis City Schools is making
it easy for parents. Early
registration for the 2007-08
school year will take place on Thursday, August 2.
Regular registration is scheduled for Tuesday, August
7.
The first
day of school, Monday, August 13, will be
a full day for students in grades 1-12. Kindergartners will
attend school on a staggered schedule between August
13 and 17, and their first full day
will be Monday, August 20. The Pre-K
school year will begin
with staggered entry August 24-25. The first full day
of Pre-K classes will be Tuesday, August 28. Parents
with students at the Pre-K level
will enjoy expanded opportunities to strengthen their
children’s
educational foundation with the addition of 45
new Pre-K classrooms in the district this year.
Good health is an important element to academic performance,
and the district has provided parents with a complete
checklist for immunizations and a thorough listing
of local clinics where students can be taken to receive
the necessary immunizations for registration.
Parents will benefit from new additions to the district’s
EDULOG transportation Web service. The service provided
by the MCS
Transportation Department will be available
by August 1st. It will allow parents to easily find
out what their child’s assigned school is, if
they qualify for regular bus transportation and, for
those who qualify, where the bus will pick them up.
Memphis City Schools will continue to require students
to follow its uniform
policy this year, and, just in
time for back-to-school shopping, parents can take
advantage of State Tax
Holiday August 3-5, which will
apply to uniforms, shoes and other school supplies.
The district is celebrating the opening of its new
Health Career Academy this school year. Located
on the South Side campus, this new
small high school has a health sciences focus and offer students the
unique opportunity to gain professional certification
of one of a wide variety of health-related fields while
earning a high school diploma.
The safety
and well-being of
students and school
environments is a top priority for Memphis City
Schools. The district's Student
Code of Conduct is designed with positive behavior
intervention and support strategies that help ensure
all schools and students are safe for the important
work of learning.
Excitement for the new school year is peaking, and

to an outstanding year filled with stories
of success and achievement on all levels.
