The Career Enhancement Program (CEP) is designed to provide academic
support services to Career and Technology students. The program
targets 11th
and 12th grade academically disadvantaged students
who have barriers to achieving success in their selected Career and
Technology majors. The Division of Careers and Technology is
required to increase specific performance levels to maintain Carl
Perkins Vocational Funding. CEP addresses Core Indicators
1S1–Academic Attainment, 1S2-Skill Proficiencies and 2D1-Completion.
Students who have an IEP mandating they pass the Gateway Tests are
also included. At some sites, all vocational students are enrolled
in CEP; at other sites, selected students are enrolled based upon
their individual needs.
CEP labs are equipped with 15 student computers, a teacher
computer, and a network file server. PLATO, Academy of
Reading and Gateway Coach software are used in the Career
Enhancement Program. CEP personnel worked with the PLATO Curriculum
Specialist to created alignments between the Tennessee Gateway Exams
and the PLATO modules. The students take practice Gateway Exams
using the Gateway Coach Software.
The teacher then uses the
alignment to make the student’s assignment in PLATO based on the
results of their practice test. Students’ scores from the beginning
and end of the year are compared. CEP Teacher Network Sessions
are held during the year so that teachers can share ideas,
strategies, and program successes. Professional Development is
offered for the teachers throughout the year.
