Goals for Health Science Education:

  • To provide students with an adequate knowledge of health care careers and supply competent, trained workers into the workplace or a pathway that leads to entrance into a one-, two-, or four-year program at a college or university.
  • To recognize health care needs and provide students with updated information on new and innovative technology in health care.
  • To support a cooperative effort between high school and postsecondary education for allied health and nursing programs.
  • To collaborate with the health care industry to update and change knowledge and skills for all students enrolled in Health Science Education.

All Health Science teachers have completed three years of successful employment in a related health occupation and hold current licensure or certification in an allied health occupation, or current licensure as a registered nurse. Health Science Education prepares students for careers in health care by offering the following:

  • An academic foundation that includes reading and writing (charts, reports, manuals, etc.); the performance of mathematical operations, such as computations involving weights and measures; and the application of science knowledge, such as biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Hands-on experiences in a health care facility. These include job shadowing, clinical internships, cooperative education and other work-based experiences.
  • An opportunity to become a certified nurses aide.
  • Opportunities for Tech Prep programs to earn college credit while in high school.
  • Preparation for employment in new and innovative health care careers.

The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a national, student-based nonprofit organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education. HOSA has more than 80,000 members in 2,500 secondary and postsecondary chapters in 44 chartered state associations nationwide. Its mission is to promote career opportunities in the health professions and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare.

HOSA is the only student organization that addresses the nation’s healthcare workforce shortage by promoting career opportunities in the health professions in elementary, middle, and secondary educational institutions. HOSA is committed to building a conduit through which qualified students will enroll in Health Science Technology Education programs and participate in HOSA chapters. Since 1976, HOSA has recruited, developed, and encouraged more than 1.2 million students to pursue a career in the health professions.
