The Workforce Investment Network
(WIN) In-School Program is designed to provide year-round
academic enrichment and work-based learning opportunities
for eligible youth. Students participate in after school programs at
selected sites and in Saturday Enrichment Workshops offered each
month. The workshops cover topics such as study tips, test taking
skills, attaining goals, workplace readiness, leadership, and money
management. Only students 14-21 years of age are eligible and must
meet federally-mandated income guidelines as well as other criteria.
Participants are eligible for summer job slots awarded to the
program.
In the 2005-2006 school year, MCS
WIN In-School Program provided after-school programs and Saturday
Academy Workshops for 116 carry-over students. The focus of
these activities was academic enrichment in math, science and
reading, career exploration, service learning, life skills,
work-based learning opportunities, test taking skills, attaining
goals, and money management. A total of 22 Saturday Academies
throughout the school year featured a series of professionals from
various fields.
Participants in the WIN program
will complete a Life Skills curriculum and participate in
community service activities, college, business and cultural tours,
as well as unpaid work experience and summer employment
opportunities. Every student will complete a resume, cover letters,
and application forms. Guest speakers from the local labor market
discuss future career opportunities, skill and education
requirements, salary potential and other issues of relevance.
Students in the WIN program complete the
Kuder Career Assessment
and meet with a career counselor to discuss their results
