Roles and
Responsibilities of School Health
Nurses
- Identification, assessment, planning,
intervention and evaluation of students health
concerns.
- Manage chronic disease cases; care for ill
and injured students
- Provide activities and education to promote
health and prevent teen pregnancy, STDs,
tobacco, alcohol and drug use.
- Provide crisis intervention services
- Medication administration and monitoring.
- School/community/health care provider
liaison.
- Assist with reporting and control
communicable diseases outbreaks staff and
parents to promote healthy life styles.
- Serve as a resource to teachers, parents and
students.
- Conduct immunization surveys and secure
needed immunizations.
- Provide health education to students,
parents/families
- Provides first aid and CPR training to staff
- Assists in conducting safety and
environmental assessments
- Develop Individualized Health Care Plans
- Conduct home visits to children/families
Special Health
Needs Nurses
Responsible for health care to
students with 504 plans: Medically fragile
students
- Conducts assessments and evaluations
- Administers and monitors medications, blood
glucose levels
- Develops Individual health Care Plans,
attends IEP meetings
- Administers NG feedings
- Provides tracheotomy care, administers
catherizations
- Conducts home visits to students/families
