Audiology Services

The audiologists provide information regarding a child’s hearing acuity in order to assist in determining academic needs.  The audiologists help students with hearing impairment access the learning environment.  Services include:  Audiological Diagnostic Evaluations, System-wide School Based Hearing Screening and Support Services to students with hearing impairments.

-    Audiological Diagnostic Evaluations:  A battery of basic audiological tests as well as otoacoustic emission tests and auditory brainstem response are provided.  Testing and monitoring of amplification systems is also provided.

-         System-wide School Based Hearing Screening:  The audiologists oversee three teams of hearing technicians.  A team of technicians test students in designated grades and those suspected of hearing problems at each elementary school annually.  A team of audiologists conducts follow-up testing at the schools for those students who did not pass initial screenings.  Appropriate follow-up recommendations, medical referrals, or diagnostic hearing evaluations are made for those who did not pass.  Diagnostic audiological evaluations are available free of charge at Colonial Hearing and Speech Center.

-         Support Services to Students with Hearing Impairment:  Hearing support services are provided to students in their assigned schools.  The audiologists monitor hearing aids and other amplification systems.  Minor earmold and hearing aid repairs and the making of earmold impressions are addressed at the school location.  Consultative services are provided to teachers and school staff regarding the needs of students with hearing impairments.  Family members are counseled regarding the implications of hearing loss and given instructions for the use of hearing aids and FM amplification systems.  The audiologists also consult with hearing healthcare professionals, physicians in the community and serve as liaisons between these professionals and families to ensure that the hearing needs of our students are being met.  The audiologists participate in IEP meetings as needed.
