Elementary
Literacy
The literacy program includes
the teaching of reading, writing, and elements of language. Children who are eligible for special
education classes usually have been unsuccessful in those areas. DIBELS is an assessment tool that is used
to determine each child’s specific deficit areas. The Division of Exceptional Children and
Health Services is committed to using research-based programs to intervene
by teaching to the child’s deficits.
Memphis City Schools’ core program, Scott Foresman Reading,
is used, as well as supplemental resources, including Voyager, Failure Free Reading, Language!,
Read 180, Don Johnston products, Read
Well, SRA, and various computer-assisted instruction programs
are used.
