Itinerant
Program
An Itinerant
teacher at the student’s community school site serves students with
hearing impairments who are integrated full time into a general
education classroom. The student’s curriculum is based on the
Memphis City Schools’ grade level expectations that are taught at
the school site. One
Itinerant teacher provides service to approximately 40 students,
kindergarten to age 21.
Students with a hearing loss that is secondary
in need to other disabilities are served in the program that best
provides the support for the student’s multiple needs.
The Itinerant Hearing Impaired Teacher provides appropriate
services at that site.
·
Staffing
The Hearing Impaired Program consists of
Hearing professionals. The
positions they fill include one Coordinator, a Program Supervisor,
one Itinerant teacher, and 26 appropriately trained Teachers.
The program also has five audiologists, 13 interpreters,
special education assistants, and consultants from other disciplines
as needed.
·
Placement
All students served in the Hearing Impaired
program must have a hearing loss that meets state guidelines for
services and have an educational need related to the hearing loss
that is identified after a full evaluation has been completed.
The IEP Team determines the exact services to be implemented
and who will provide the services.
