Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program, which is affiliated with the University of Memphis New Teacher Center, is designed to effectively transition first time teachers from the university to the classroom setting to improve both teacher retention rates and student academic achievement.  Under this program two teacher mentors are selected and rigorously trained to provide mentoring to first-time teachers on the New Teacher Center mentoring methodology, assessment tools, and intervention strategies prior to being assigned to new teachers.  Teacher mentors meet individually on a weekly basis with their assigned teacher on the school site.  Mentors provide assistance with teaching strategies, classroom management, lesson planning, identification of curriculum resources, understanding EasyIEP® and the special education process.  In addition, mentors help teachers establish professional learning goals, conduct classroom observation, offer teaching demonstrations, coach teachers in methods related to student and parent interactions, and provide emotional support.

Locations: Various School Sites.

Contact: New Teacher Mentors: Tiffany Luckett- 416-5815, Symentra Matthews- 416-3455 and Yvonne Johnson- 416-3672.
