Special Education Preschool Services in
Memphis City Schools are offered to those children who have been
identified as meeting the State and Federal guidelines as a child
with a disability. MCS offers a continuum of services in
a variety of settings. These
settings are: home
based, community based, and school based.
-
Home
Based: Services are offered to provide behavior
training in the home to assist parents with students experiencing
adverse behaviors.
-
School Based: The placement of a child in a Special
Education Preschool (SPED PK) classroom is determined by the IEP
Team and is based on individual needs.
Children placed in a school-based classroom are typically
in need of a high level of adult facilitation and guidance in both
learning and interactions with peers.
SPED PK school-based classrooms are non-categorical and include
typical peers for inclusion opportunities.
Classrooms are integrated in elementary school buildings
throughout the MCS district. There are special programs for children
with Hearing and Visual impairments and Autism.
-
Autism: The SPED PK Autism Program offers self-contained
classes for students whose behavior and activity require a highly
structured classroom environment with predictability and visual
supports in order to make progress on their educational program. Based on the needs of the students, other
options including home, school, or community-based placement may
be appropriate.
-
Hearing: The SPED PK Hearing Impaired Program offers
specialized approaches utilizing oral-aural and total communication
strategies. Based on
student needs, children with heraing impairments may be served in
a non-categorical classroom.
Location: Colonial Hearing Center, 1360 Colonial Road,
Memphis, TN 38117.
