         School Health

The Coordinated School Health Program is an organized set of policies, procedures, programs, protocols, and services designed to protect and promote the well being of students and staff.  The Coordinated School Health approach is based on the eight (8) component model: Health Services, Healthy School Environment, Mental and Social Services, Counselors, Health Education, Parental Involvement, Physical Education and Nutritional Services.  The program is responsible for developing, planning, evaluating and coordinating services for students.

     Special Health Care

  Nursing care services are managed through School Health Services.  School Health services provide program direction and oversight for LPN’s.  A nursing care plan is completed by the Clinical Supervising RN for the LPN to follow while caring for the student.  If nursing services are considered, a RN or LPN must be present at the IEP meeting.

·   Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy

 

Physical and Occupational therapy is a related service managed through School Health.  These services support student access to the curriculum and facilities in order to meet their educational need.  The lead therapists provide direct oversight of services.

·          HIV Special Project

 

The Memphis City Schools HIV/AIDS Prevention Program works hand in hand with schools and community organizations, serving as an advocate for conducting appropriate effective HIV education.  The Special Project Coordinator provides professional development for teachers, school personnel and students to prevent risky-behaviors that may result in infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDS), and unintended pregnancy. The HIV Special Project is funded through the Center for Disease Control.

·          Asthma Program

 

Students with asthma are educated using the “Open Airways” curriculum developed by the American Lung Association. Each year 20 new elementary schools are selected to receive the program. To date, 1,493 students 1,057 teachers and staff have been educated. Asthma Case managers are responsible for program delivery. The Asthma program is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Health.

·          Power Breathing Program

 
The Power Breathing Program is a program developed by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. School Nurses educate teens with asthma. The program concentrates efforts on signs and symptoms and living with asthma.  In 2004-2005, 100 high school students to participate. The Power Breathing program is funded through the Centers for Disease Control.

·          Diabetes Program

 

Diabetes Case managers focus on educating staff on diabetes. The case manager intervenes to support the family and child. The case manager provides one on one support to brittle diabetic students as needed. The Case manager provides the school with follow-up in the event of an emergency.  In 2004-2005, 212 students received this service.

The Diabetes program is funded through the Department of Health.

·          Immunization Program

 

Each year Health Services partners with Memphis and Shelby County Health Department and Well Child, Inc. to offer immunizations free of charge to families.  Immunizations are given at various location sites. All immunizations are offered to children with a concentrated effort for 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th grade.

·          VERB Program

 

The VERB program is an activity program that encourages the child to “keep moving”.  Supplies and kits are delivered to each middle or elementary school.  Each participating school is eligible to receive a grant in the amount of $1000.00 dollars.  Each school district may apply for additional dollars based on participation.  School nurses and P.E. teachers help to facilitate this program.

The VERB program is supported by Centers for Disease Control.

·          Obesity Program

 

The "Take 10" lessons are designed to encompass the required state curriculum Language Arts, Math, Social Studies etc. while reinforcing health and nutrition. The Learn 2-B Healthy project uses the “Take 10” Curriculum created by teachers, for teachers and students. The Learn 2-B Healthy project will target Kindergarten and Second grade students.

·          Well Child Screenings

 

Comprehensive health examinations at no cost to parents or schools that will help detect and eliminate barriers to development and learning for students. The screenings are performed at school to minimize time students spend outside the classroom and provide a positive health experience for the student in their own environment. In 2004-2005, over 9000 physicals were performed. This is a partnered program with Well Child Inc. Parental consent is required.

·          Dental Program

 

The dental program is a partnership with MCS and Shelby County Health Department.  The program is funded through the state and provides dental screenings and sealants to all students with parental consent. There is no cost to parents.  In 2004-2005, 11, 867 students received oral exams and over 70,000 sealants were placed.
