This Hamilton High School
graduate is recognized today as one of the most respected and accomplished
leaders in law enforcement in the United States.
James H. Bolden, Jr.s solid mind and dedicated service record
stems from a highly distinguished educational track. After graduating
from Hamilton, he went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in criminal
justice from Memphis State University. His studies continued, first
at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy, and later
at the illustrious Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston
University. James also received valuable training under the guidance
of the Israeli National Police force through the world renowned Georgia
International Law Enforcement Exchange Program.
James first professional law enforcement opportunity came as a
patrolman with the Memphis Police Department in 1968, a time when it
was uncommon for African Americans to hold such a position. He co-founded
the Afro-American Police Association in 1973, and just eight years later,
he was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Criminal Investigator
Division. James rose through the ranks as Lieutenant, Captain, Commander,
Inspector, Chief Inspector and Chief of the MPD Training Academy, where
he revolutionized training methods for all law enforcement personnel. He
retired in 1997 and returned in 2000 as Deputy Director of Police Services.
He was appointed Director of all Police Services for the City of Memphis
in 2003, and helped drop violent crimes to the lowest level in more
than a decade. His success at every level of the department was soon
recognized at the highest level as he was hired as District Eleven Director
of Homeland Security for the State of Tennessee in 2004.
Although now retired from law enforcement, James remains very active
in various youth mentoring organizations and local charities. He, his
wife Renee and their adult children, Debbie, Alicia, James III, Jabiana
and Justice, are grateful to the Memphis City Schools system for the
significant role it has played in shaping their lives.
