Oscar Reed

Booker T. Washington High School

Oscar moved to Memphis with his family at an early age, where he developed his athletic talents as a youngster and became a standout player for the varsity football team at Booker T. Washington. His great play and solid character during those four years at BTW earned him a scholarship to play at Colorado State University. It was no shock when the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings drafted Oscar to play in 1968. Oscar appeared in 86 career games for the Vikings (1968-1974) and the Atlanta Falcons (1975). He rushed the ball 504 times for 2,008 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. He also caught 94 passes for 677 yards and three scores.

Today, Oscar still resides in the Minneapolis area. For the last 25 years, he has used the same drive and leadership skills that made him a force on the field to build a career in community youth development. He has implemented and directed programs for low-income families in the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority as the city’s Youth Programs Director for 15 years. Oscar also co-founded “Life’s Missing Link Inc.,” a non-profit youth and family service agency, for which he presently serves as Director of the Community Empowerment and Prevention Program.
