Thomas Stern

Central High School (1939-1943)


Thomas Stern credits Memphis City Schools with giving him a strong foundation for his career in science. After graduating from Central High School in 1943, he attended the University of Tennessee (UT) College of Medicine and graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1950, he completed his final training at UT College of Medicine in Memphis and became a faculty member.

In addition to serving on the college faculty, Dr. Stern has directed The Stern Cardiovascular Center established by his father Neuton Stern in 1920. He is the author of four textbooks including Rare Diseases and Bases of Treatment, as well as many scholarly articles. Dr. Stern serves as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. The Tennessee State Medical Association honored Dr. Stern in 1991 with the Distinguished Service Award.

As a commissioner on the Memphis City Schools Board of Education for 12 years, he visited schools in his district every week. Dr. Stern chaired the Budget and Finance Committees of Memphis City Schools and was a representative on the Board of the Council of the Great City Schools.

Dr. Thomas Stern has dedicated his life to serving people through teaching, training, and caring for others.

3. Write a report on a subject related to cardiology such as open-heart surgery, pacemakers, etc.
