Commissioner Tomeka Hart is the Vice President of the Board for 2007. A native Memphian, she graduated from Trezevant High School in 1989 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She taught in middle and high school for five years in Georgia while working on her Masters of Business Administration degree at Kennesaw State University, which was awarded to her in 1997. She returned to Memphis to attend the University of Memphis School of Law, graduating with her Juris Doctor degree in 2002. She maintained a labor and employment law practice from 2002 to 2006, working, most recently, with Ford & Harrison, LLP, a national law firm. Hart left her law practice in December 2006, when she was selected as the President/CEO of the Memphis Urban League, an affiliate of the National Urban League. She was elected to the Memphis Board of Education in 2004 and began serving as a Board Commissioner in January of 2005. Hart chairs the Policy and Legal Services Committee, and serves on the Academic Support, Budget and Mental Health Committees, and is the representative for the Memphis and Shelby County Delegation. She serves on several Boards of Directors, including the Riverfront Development Corporation, New Pathways Community Development Corporation, the University of Memphis Law School Alumni Association, and the Leadership Academy. Hart is a graduate of Leadership Memphis (2007) and the Leadership Academy Master’s program (2007). Commissioner Hart has been recognized for her service to the Memphis community. In 2005, she was selected as a Memphis Business Journal “Top 40 under 40” honoree. Additionally, Hart received the 2006 Mpact Memphis Mpact Maker Award for Political Achievement, and she is a two time recipient of the University of Memphis’ School of Law Dean Distinguished Service Award.
