Founded in 1916, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art
is the largest encyclopedic art museum in Tennessee. With over 8000
paintings and sculptures, works on paper, and decorative arts from
antiquity to the present, as well as world-class traveling exhibitions,
lectures, films, concerts, and family programming, the Brooks is a
center of cultural activity. Centrally located in Overton Park, the
Museum is easily accessible from Poplar Avenue and offers free parking
in the rear of the Museum.
We have a teachers' workshop (preview of our
next big exhibit, Pissarro: Creating the
Impressionist Landscape)
on October 11th from 3:30 to 5:30.
Please RSVP to edu@brooksmuseum.org.

Tours for School Groups
For an exciting, educational field trip, the
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is the place to visit! Discipline-based
art education tours of the Brooks permanent collection and special
traveling exhibitions are conducted by trained museum docents. Tours
are provided for groups of 10 to 60 students in grades 1 through 12.
Most tours include a hands-on studio art activity that complements the
material introduced in the Museum tour.
Teachers who bring their classes for a tour are
provided with informative, educational packets that include materials
to prepare the class for their visit as well as suggested follow-up
activities. Additionally, students who come to the Brooks with their
class will receive a "Come Back Card." The cards are good for free
family admission (up to 5 people), so that students can come back to
the Museum to share what they learned with their families.
School tours are available Tuesday through Friday
and most tours with hands-on activities run approximately an hour and a
half. All scheduled school groups receive free admission (unless
otherwise noted). Teachers are required to provide their own
transportation to and from the Museum. A list of the offered tour
topics is provided below. Reservations are required. For additional
information about these tours, please contact the Education department
at 901.544.6215 or email edu@brooksmuseum.org.

Art and the Basic Curriculum
Art and the Basic Curriculum (ABC) is a
museum-school collaboration focusing on the fourth-grade level, in its
twenty-seventh consecutive year of operation at The Memphis Brooks
Museum of Art. The purpose of ABC is to integrate art into the
standard, fourth-grade academic curriculum.
Since its inception in 1979, ABC has grown from a
program that served 120 students and was conducted by volunteers, to a
projected 1,000 students participating during the 2006-2007 school
term. One hundred percent of the schools enrolled this year are Title I
and do not have an art teacher on staff. This Memphis City Schools /
Brooks Museum partnership brings quality art education to students who
do not formally receive learning opportunities in the visual arts. The
fourth-grade teachers involved in the program play a key role in its
success. Teacher packets and lesson ideas are provided so they may
continue to use art to make curriculum connections in the classroom.
The Brooks Museum Education Department is
dedicated to providing this unique educational experience, and is
especially committed to bringing the arts to those students who do not
receive art education as a part of their regular curriculum.
Brooks
After School
Launched in April of 2002, Brooks After School
(BAS) is a collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater
Memphis. BAS benefits eight-to-eleven year olds from all Memphis club
sites. BAS is modeled on the Museum’s successful Art and the
Basic Curriculum (ABC) program for fourth-graders from Memphis City
Schools.
Taught by experienced teachers who visit the clubs
twice and lead three tours of the permanent collection and special
exhibitions at the Museum. The BAS classes all include hands-on
activities, which are geared toward building self-esteem and providing
a safe and unique after school environment that encourages positive
self-expression. This program has been generously funded by The
Tennessee Arts Commission. For more information about BAS, call the
Education department at 901.544.6215 or email edu@brooksmuseum.org.
