MCS' Policy Committee Recommends Further Study
of Daily Metal Detector Screenings in All High Schools and Middle Schools

Memphis, Tenn. – Tonight, February 7, Memphis City Schools' Policy Committee recommended further study of metal detector screenings at all high schools and middle schools.

Every middle and high school is equipped with a minimum of one stand-up metal detection walk-through unit and two metal detection wands.  An additional walk-through unit is added per 500 students, and an additional wand is added per 300 students.

It takes at least six staff members to operate one metal detection station and can take as many as 20 total staff members to conduct the checks at a larger school.

Metal detection is one of several security measures the district uses to help ensure the safety of students during school hours.  Other measures include:

  • Full-time district security force
  • 24-hour security patrols of all school campuses and neighborhoods
  • Memphis City Schools officers and the Memphis Police Department's Officers in the Schools (OIS)
