Proactive Course Taken
to Restore Sound Operations at District’s Central Nutrition Center
Memphis,
Tenn. – Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dan Ward assured
School Board members and district staff members that thanks to swift
action, order is being restored at the Central Nutrition Center (CNC).
“A
series of proactive steps have been set in motion to restore order at
the Central Nutrition Center,” Ward stated. “Our Internal Audit team
worked diligently to address all CNC practices deemed to be
inconsistent with the long-established standard for safe and sound
operations. I am pleased to report that all questionable food items
have been safely removed from the CNC and that the needs of all
students who receive school meals were adequately met throughout this
process.”
Supt.
Ward has accepted the resignation of the current CNC director and will
oversee the forthcoming change in leadership. The move stems from a
series of operational missteps under the current administration of the
facility, including the recent disposal of nearly $600,000 worth of
food (slightly more than 1 percent of the CNC’s total budget) that was
refrigerated improperly. A long-time MCS employee who has served as a
manager at the CNC for several years will be introduced as the new
director during Monday night’s regular Board of Education meeting.
The
new director will be charged immediately with carrying out the
following proactive measures for inventory management and inventory
control advised by Mr. Ward and the district’s Internal Audit team:
Inventory
Management
- Develop
policies and procedures regarding desirable inventory levels.
- Perform
physical counts of inventory each year prior to the annual bidding
process.
- Supervise
all independent, employee-performed inventory checks and follow-up
reviews, and record results on permanent inventory count sheets.
- Sort
the inventory requirement plan by item category for use in making
buying decisions.
- Management
should regularly compare actual performance to planned results and
order appropriate corrective action for any significant differences.
Inventory
Control
- Properly
identify storage locations with bin labels or bar coding on all food
items, and identify slow-moving inventory items.
- Utilize
the inventory balance report when determining quantities for reorders.
-
Indicate whether there is appropriate allocation of operational and
supervisory responsibility.
More
information will be made public upon the completion of the internal
audit.
