MIAA GOLF

NEWS

TSSAA has passed a heat policy for its member schools.

No activities will be allowed when the heat index at the location of the activity is in excess of 104 degrees. This includes practices and contests at any level (HS, MS, JV etc...) and at any location (indoor or outdoor).

Schools are required to measure the heat index at the location of its activities associated with sanctioned sports.

For example, you take a measurement outside where your team will be practicing.  The device reads a heat index of 105 degrees. Practice is suspended according to policy.  You decide to take the team inside of the gym with no AC.  You must perform a reading there as well.  If the reading is in excess of 104 degrees, the same rules apply.  Once the heat index, reaches acceptable levels practice can resume with proper precautions.

Policy Guidelines:

Schools will need to have he capability to measure heat index at the site(s) where activities take place.  It is the home team's responsibility to measure heat index when needed before athletic contests to determine what adjustments, if any need to be made.  The heat index should be checked every 30 minutes if the heat index is 95 degrees or greater to monitor for increased heat index.

Heat index readings must be taken from an instrument(s) capable of measuring relative humidity and temperature and the site of the activity.  Heat index instruments/psychrometers can be purchased from most any medical supply distributor i.e. School Health, Medco, Henry Schien etc...

For your convenience: A School Health Corp. representative will be at the MIAA Football Coaches meeting (HS @1pm, MS at 2:30pm) at the MIAA Office on July 20th.  The representative will be providing information about heat index monitors and taking orders.  These instruments typically price around ($45-$100). For earlier ordering:  School Health Corp: Christy Fisher (CFisher@schoolhealth.com) or  Annette Powell (APowell@schoolhealth.com), phone  866.323.5465, Ask About 'MIAA Best Price' on Heat Index Monitors

This policy will take effect Fall 2009-2010.
