Temple Israel Sisterhood
Adopt-A-School

When the Temple Israel Sisterhood adopted the Colonial Visually Limited Program it was a natural extension of the Service to the Blind project of the International organization, Women of Reform Judaism, of which the Sisterhood is a founding member. The goal of the Temple Israel Sisterhood program is to offer a "hands on" enrichment opportunity for the children enrolled in the Colonial Visually Limited Summer Camp program. It is the Sisterhood's hope that by offering these special children opportunities enjoyed by children with no disabilities, their confidence, self-esteem, social skills and independence will grow by leaps and bounds. Field trips include the Zoo, the Movies, the Bowling Alley, the Skating Rink, the Airport and many other places. For four years the Sisterhood conducted a tennis program which allowed the children with visual impairments to hold a tennis racquet, hit a ball, and learn some basic fundamentals of tennis. The program was taught by a tennis professional trained to teach children with disabilities. The equipment as well as a monetary grant was provided by the United States Professional Tennis Association. The Temple Israel Sisterhood has received two Or Ami awards from the Women of Reform Judaism for the Adopt-A-School Program. The "Or Ami" Award (Or Ami means "light of the people" in Hebrew), is presented to a Sisterhood group for an outstanding project and/or an outstanding service. The first award was for participating in the Colonial Summer Program itself and the second award was for the Tennis Program.

Sisterhood Braille Transcription Program

For over fifty years the Temple Israel Sisterhood has made available to the Board of Education, other institutions, and individuals, braillists certified by the Library of Congress. Sisterhood volunteers transcribe books and other materials into braille for students in the Memphis City Schools. They also transcribe materials into braille for other community needs. To the best of our knowledge the Temple Israel Sisterhood is the only group in Shelby County to provide this service. The Temple Israel Sisterhood braillists as a group were honored by the Volunteer Center of Memphis with a Volunteer of the Year award for their service.
