Teachers GET IT
Teachers Gaining Expertise Together in Training
Teachers GET IT, a University of Memphis program funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, supports the preparation of ESL teachers for the Memphis City and Shelby County school systems. Each year, one cohort of 20 teachers (15 MCS, 5 SCS) will complete the coursework for ESL licensure. In addition, selected content area teachers will participate in workshops conducted around the Memphis City and Shelby County areas on strategies for working with non-native speakers of English. Under the terms of the grant, the first cohort will target middle and high school teachers, although the program is open to teachers at all grade levels if space is available.
Grant Information:
15 Memphis City Schools regular classroom teachers selected for each cohort
Grant pays for 80% of course work
Bonus at completion of program to cover other costs
Most courses are web-based
All interested regular classroom teachers must complete an application form, submit a one-page essay, and sign a program assurances sheet. Selection criteria are based on community served, previous ESL courses taken, district needs, ESL program needs, and the completed application process. Hiring dates and service years may also be considered if needed in this selection process. Participants not selected in the first cohort will have the ability to apply for the additional cohorts over the next 5 years. Applications must be received by October 30, 2007.
