English as a Second Language
The Students
At the end of the 2003-2004 school year there were over 5,264 students from non-English language backgrounds (NELB) in the Memphis City Schools. NELB students represent over 68 different languages and dialects and over 100 different countries. Approximately 3,800 of these students are classified as ELL and need instructional modifications within the classroom and special English and language classes.
