U.S. Department of Education Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative --Get professional development now! Learn about teaching algebra, reading in content areas, differentiated instruction, turning data into information, and more with free online professional development sessions at this web site.
Learning Express Library --The site provides a completely interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help patrons, students, and adult learners succeed on the academic or licensing tests they must pass. You'll get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results.
ProTeacher! --Friendly professional discussions for teachers in grades KK-8 are offered at this site.
PBS Teacher Source --Includes more than 1,000 free lesson plans (matched to standards), teacher guides and online activities--and you can explore these resources by subject or grade level or with keywords. The site includes information about how teachers and media specialists can legally tape PBS shows for classroom use. The site also includes advance schedules and information about ordering PBS videos.
The Annenberg Teachers' Lab --Experiment with new teaching and learning ideas in math and science -- and identify activities you can use in the classroom. This site features labs based on the professional development series and workshops broadcast on the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project Channel. Each Lab combines online activities with background information and interactive polls or worksheets participants can use in their classrooms, plus links to related Web sites.
ALPS - Harvard's Teacher Lab --The site includes model lesson plans and activities; curriculum design tools; online educational publications; interactive forums, workshops and conferences; and teacher journals reflecting on practice. The site is built around three themes--Teaching for Understanding; The Thinking Classroom; and Education with New Technologies.
Edutopia Online --This may be the best site on the Web about cutting-edge teaching and learning. Of course, there's an emphasis on technology, but the resources here go far beyond that. You'll find stories about innovative schools, videos that show ideas in action, interviews with experts, and whole sets of information on topics like project-based learning. Explore this site--it's worth a couple of hours!
DiscoverySchool.com for Teachers --Lesson plans, teaching tools, chat listservs, classroom customizers, a clip art gallery, a puzzle generator, and access to Kathy Shrock's famous collection of education weblinks. Then there's the brainbuster feature (great for daily startups), the Science Fair Central, etc.
Teach.net --Subtitled "Smart Tools for Busy Teachers," this is certainly one of the best all-around teacher sites on the Web.
Learning Network for Teachers --A large commercial website full of resources for teachers at every level and in every subject. "Our goal is to provide you with lesson plans, resources, and materials that make your professional life easier." Part of the larger Learning Network which has special sections for students, parents, and teens. See especially the Fact Monster homework help site.
The Rainforest Action Network --This site is designed for teenaged readers and provides current news regarding environmental efforts. Students can participate in letter-writing campaigns, find out which issues need immediate attention, and learn more about ongoing environmental efforts. The site can give young people information they can use to explain some of the environmental dangers we currently face and offer ideas on how to get involved.
The Western/Pacific Literacy Network --A site that aims to make news stories accessible to students who may find a newspaper too daunting. Stories are timely and interesting. Teachers will find instructional strategies and help with many of the tech features used in the story. Stories are sometimes read aloud so students can follow along.
Journey North --The site allows students to track the migration of a dozen migratory species each year. Students across the hemisphere share field observations and link with scientists who provide expertise. Students can see live coverage of migrating animals and provide such information as the amount of daylight and changes in temperature.
California CyberGuides: Teacher Guides and Student Activities--CyberGuides are supplementary, standards-based, web-delivered units of instruction centered on core works of literature. Each CyberGuide contains a student and teacher edition, standards, a task and a process by which it may be completed, teacher-selected web sites, and a rubric.
