Jazz Band
Jazz is considered throughout the world as America's greatest indigenous art form. It is recognized as one of the highest cultural and artistic achievements. Memphis City Schools is proud to perpetuate the study of jazz through a curriculum that focuses on a progressive step by step approach to mastery of this complex musical genre. Thereby accessing and unlocking the musical jewels within the works of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Thad Jones, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane, among others. According to Blume, improvisation is one of the highest level thinking skills. Our goal, in the Memphis City Schools jazz curriculum, is to stretch the imagination through study of jazz styles and improvisation.
