Memphis City Schools, in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, the Department of Curriculum & Professional Development and New Leaders for New Schools, is proud to announce the creation of its first Professional Learning Community Institute (PLCI). The purpose of the PLCI is to develop capacity of Instructional Leadership Teams to identify and implement effective instructional practices (in math and literacy) to meet higher state and national standards required by NCLB.

Objectives/Outcomes for the PLCI are:

  • Increase in student achievement at the proficient and advanced levels based on content goals in the School Improvement Plan;
  • Develop PLCs within/across schools using a systemic approach to identifying and solving problems;
  • To share effective practices, both research-based and craft knowledge;
  • Increase rigor, relevance, and relationships.

We are honored that 36 School Leadership Teams submitted applications for 12 slots in our initial institute. The schools selected are:

  • Georgian Hills Elementary – Principal, Cowinta P. Key
  • Hamilton Elementary – Principal, Dr. Debra Stanford
  • Kate Bond Elementary – Principal, Lyle Conley
  • Westhaven Elementary – Principal, Dr. Angela Whitelaw
  • Fairview Middle School – Principal, Cassandra Smith
  • Hickory Ridge Middle School – Principal, Cedric Smith
  • Ridgeway Middle School – Principal, Lisa Henry
  • Southside Middle School – Principal, Kobie Sweeten
  • Middle College High School – Principal, Michelle R. Brantley
  • Mitchell High School – Principal, John Ware
  • Raleigh-Egypt High School – Principal, Dr. Oscar Love
  • Cordova High School – Principal, Anthony T. Frigo

We want to congratulate the selected schools and commend those School Leadership teams who wanted to be trailblazers in this important work.

Our long range goal is to eventually work with all School Leadership Teams in the district
