Social Studies - Constitution Day
September 17, 2007
In May 2005, the U.S. Department of Education announced
that all educational institutions receiving federal funds must observe
September 17 as Constitution Day, celebrating the 1787 signing of the
U.S. Constitution. However, when September 17 falls on a Saturday, Sunday,
or holiday, Constitution Day shall be held during the preceding or following
week. The United States Department of Education, according to its guidelines
for implementation of Constitution Day, provides campuses with the flexibility
to conduct Constitution Day programming as they desire. This allows
for programming to range from simple to complex. The Department of Education
did not allocate any funds to carry out this requirement.
4th, 5th, 8th, and 11/12th grade teachers of history are encouraged
to research web sites and other resources in order to integrate Constitution
Day during the week of September 12 - 16. There is a wealth of resources
available on the internet that will help schools implement Constitution
Day activities/programs. Some of the available web sites may be accessed
