Social Studies
The National Council for the Social Studies defines social studies
as “the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities
to promote civic competence.” Within the school program, social
studies courses provide a comprehensive program that seeks to develop
knowledge, attitudes, and skills that will enable students to understand
how groups and institutions influence the lives of individuals and give
society its stability and order. The program incorporates practice in
reflective inquiry, problem analysis, and decision –making to
enable students to develop a commitment to democracy and to become rational
citizens in a global context. Courses will utilize the four process
standards: Communication, data analysis, historical awareness, and acquiring
information and the six content standards: Culture, Economics, geography,
government and civics, history, and individuals, groups, and interactions
for instructional purposes.
