Inservice Information
Definition
In-service education is defined as a program of planned activities
designed to increase the competencies needed by all licensed personnel
in the performance of their professional responsibilities. In this context,
“competencies” are defined as the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes which enable personnel to carry out their tasks with maximum
effectiveness.
Legal Basis
T. C. A., Section 49-6-3404, (a) Each public school system shall maintain
a term of not less than two hundred (200) days, divided as follows:
- One hundred eighty (180) days for classroom instruction;
- Ten (10) days for vacation with pay;
- Five (5) days for in-service education;
- One (1) day for teacher-parent conferences; and
- Four (4) other days as designated by the local board of education
upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools.
Absence on any in-service day must be reported on the payroll
report. A full deduction (1/10 of semi-monthly salary) is made
unless the reason is personal illness, illness in the immediate family,
death in the immediate family, or jury duty, in which case the prevailing
board policy will apply.
Professional Growth/In-service activities can be used to provide make-up
sessions for teachers who have been absent for an approved reason on
an in-service day.
According to Board Policy 6125.1, other approved reasons for make-up
include the following:
- Religious Holiday.
- Subpoena or traffic summons (verification required).
- Attendance at school activities, as recommended by the principal
and approved by the Superintendent.
- Attendance at professional meetings, as recommended by the principal
and approved by the Superintendent
- Attendance at an approved college or university.
- Military service.
