MCS Health Standards
Standard #1:
Students should be able to demonstrate effectively knowledge
and skills for good mental, social, and physical health and safety.
This standard provides opportunities for students to use literacy,
numerical skills, and critical thinking and problem solving skills to
gather, analyze, and apply health information. In classrooms where
students demonstrate health-related knowledge and effective skills,
students complete assignments to obtain accurate, health-related information;
identify misconceptions; recognize healthy behaviors and norms; understand
their susceptibility to specific health threats; recognize pressures
that put them at risk; and identify, practice, and carry out actions
that will help them protect their health and well-being.
For example, when elementary students illustrate safe practices for
injury prevention and accident management, they are effectively communicating
with different audiences, through a variety of mediums, to achieve different
purposes. When middle school students research their family genetic
history and interpret the information to determine their personal health
risks, they are locating and organizing different kinds of information
to accomplish meaningful tasks. And when high school students
analyze their personal health habits in order to identify risks associated
with pathogen transmission and disease prevention, they are identifying
and assessing the benefits, risks, and consequences of decisions and
actions.
All Memphis City Schools Health, Physical Education and Lifetime Wellness
students will be engaged in the acquisition of health and fitness knowledge
and skills. As students progress toward mastery of this standard,
they will be preparing themselves to be self-directed learners, effective
communicators, and critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Specific Expectations
1. Analyze how personal health is influenced by proper and improper
functioning of the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, excretory, muscular,
nervous, sensory, skeletal, reproductive, and respiratory systems.
2. Assess one's health needs and risk factors (e.g., dietary practices,
pathogens, heredity, environment) and determine effective strategies
for health enhancement and risk reduction.
3. Demonstrate strategies for prevention and management of injuries
and accidents.
4. Describe the effects of proper and improper drug-use on self,
family, and society and assess short- and long-term consequences.
5. Communicate emotions, feelings, and ideas in positive ways and

decision-making, and conflict resolution) for effective, responsible
interpersonal relationships.
Standard #2:
Students should be able to make and communicate sound judgments
about the influences of culture, media, technology, and other factors
on personal, family, and community health and fitness.
This standard provides students with opportunities to access the most
current, credible, and applicable information required to make and communicate
sound health-related decisions pertaining to culture, media, technology,
and other factors.
For example when younger students work together to produce a visual
representation describing the influence of culture on health and fitness
practices, they are working with team members from diverse backgrounds
to accomplish group goals. When intermediate students analyze
and describe how the media seeks to influence thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors concerning health and fitness, they are distinguishing between
fact, opinion, and interpretation. When high school students modify
cultural habits to improve health and fitness practices, they are knowledgeable
of cultural diversity in a global society.
All Memphis City Schools Health, Physical Education and Lifetime Wellness
students will be engaged in making and communicating sound judgments
about health and fitness as it pertains to influences of culture, media,
technology, and other factors. As they work toward mastery of
this standard, students will be critical thinkers, problem solvers,
productive citizens, and effective communicators.

and describe the implications that these advancements may have on
health and fitness.
4. Identify factors (e.g., social situations of teen pregnancy, poverty,
homelessness, crime/ violence, etc.) which affect personal, family,
and community health and fitness.
Standard #3:
Students should be able to demonstrate various forms of movement
associated with fitness for life activities.
This standard provides opportunities for students to demonstrate various
movements. In the elementary school years, many opportunities
should exist for the introduction, practice, and refinement of skills.
The middle school years should offer students the opportunity to participate
in nonthreatening situations that minimize failure and losing, with
variety being the key. However, the high school years should focus
on specialization and competency in various forms of movement.
When primary students are developing maturity and versatility in the
use of fundamental skills (e.g. running, skipping, throwing, striking),
they are developing, presenting, and following logical reasoning.
When students in the middle years display motor patterns which have
evolved into specialized skills (e.g., a specific dance step, chest
pass, catching with a glove), they may have persevered when tasks are
not easily accomplished. In high school, when students are selecting
a few activities for regular participation on the basis of their interest
and ability, they are setting goals and identifying the steps and resources
necessary to attain them.
All Memphis City Schools Health, Physical Education, and Lifetime Wellness
students will understand the importance of movement as it relates to
total health and wellness. All students will be offered many opportunities
to demonstrate movement in order to achieve a higher level of health
and fitness.

strategies, and products.
This standard provides opportunities for students to achieve a health-enhancing
level of physical fitness. Students are encouraged to develop
higher levels of basic fitness and physical competence needed for many
work situations and active leisure participation.
When primary students are identifying changes in the body that occur
as a result of physical activity, they are using the "scientific
method" to solve problems and create understanding. When
intermediate students are analyzing available health and fitness information
on exercise equipment, they are reading with comprehension and identifying
the main points expressed in written text. When high school seniors
are participating in a variety of dynamic activities that improves and
maintains components of fitness, they are using technology to solve
problems and produce quality products.
All Memphis City Schools Health, Physical Education and Lifetime Wellness
