Cyber School - NCLB/Ed Tech

Ed Tech funds for Memphis City Schools will be used to to assist low performing schools. Additional hardware along with teacher professional development will impact student use of technology to support learning. Each school participating will have a technology coach assigned to the school in order to provide faculty with intensive professional development throughout the school year.

Studies have shown that when technology is a routine part of the academic experience, student attendance improves, dropout rates decline and students’ attitude toward learning is affected positively (ACOT Research). Student centered learning as an instructional strategy consistently prepares students to score higher on standardized tests. Teachers with constant access to computers tend to use collaborative strategies (Johnson and Johnson, 1989) and student centered learning. Teachers using student learning centered approaches focus their lessons on discussion rather than lecture, encourage student led inquiry and emphasize higher level thinking skills. (The Laptop Program Research Et AL, June 2002). Peer teaching, cooperative learning groups and online research sharing requires students to develop and practice communications skills. Technology coaches will assist teachers in planning quality lessons which meet curriculum expectations. Students come to class eager to learn and take more pride in their work when the learning process infuses technology.
