Superintendent's
Corner
The
children of Memphis are growing up in a city that ranks number 2 in
the prevalence of violent crimes, out of 320 communities compared in
2004. The city has also been noted in recent years for its high rates
of sexually transmitted diseases. Other statistics are also disturbing:
almost 20 percent of Memphis youth live in neighborhoods characterized
by high rates of poverty, unemployment and high school dropouts; and
one in six children born in Memphis is born to a teen mother, with
31 percent of these teens having at least two children while still
a teenager.
