Superintendent's
Corner
This
week, as we return from our observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. Holiday yesterday and go about our work, I hope we can carry with
us in our instruction and our interactions with our children and young
people the principles and teachings of non-violence, brotherhood, justice,
fairness and the importance of dreams.

Names Superintendent Carol Johnson 2005’s Top Communicator
Dr.
Carol Johnson’s voice has echoed through the community with nothing
but optimism and aspiration for the children of Memphis City Schools
since she arrived in the city as the district’s superintendent
in 2003. This year, Dr. Johnson’s dedication to remain a visible
symbol of positivism for the youth of Memphis has earned her the honor
of being named Communicator of the Year by the Memphis Chapter of the
Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

Junior
League of Memphis Making a Difference at Macon Elementary
Faculty
and staff at Macon Elementary say there’s no better way to describe
their two-year partnership with the Junior League of Memphis than, “simply
priceless.” In the last year alone, the Junior League has been
providing lunch for the faculty and giving each of the teachers a gift
certificate to buy new materials for their classrooms at Knowledge Tree.
Volunteers have also attended and assisted with PTO meetings, tutored
children in math and reading and provided gift certificates for needy
students to buy clothes at their thrift store.
