city. There are simply too many wasted lives and we can no longer tolerate

Dept. of Education Awards $16 Million for Reading Project at Memphis
City Schools
Memphis City Schools
is the proud recipient of a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S.
Department of Education under the Striving Readers program. The school
district will receive $16,074,687 over a five-year period. Roughly
$2.9 million will be awarded this year.

Mrs. Rhonda Houston-Hemingway’s
second grade class at Shannon Elementary had a great time celebrating
Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2. The students dressed up in big
hats and bow ties to look like the Cat in the Hat and read Dr. Seuss
books all day.

City Schools Launches 2006-07 Pre-K Awareness Campaign;
New Guidelines for Parents, Pre-K Partners
"Memphis
City Schools this week announced plans to begin the enrollment process
for the second year of its state-funded Pre-K Programs. Last year the
state provided more than $1 million for 26 new Pre-K classrooms in
Memphis, 16 of which are located at Memphis City Schools. The district
expects continued funding of these classrooms for the 2006-07 school
year and remains hopeful that legislators will approve additional dollars
to expand the program when the General Assembly meets in May.
