March 2 several schools participated in Read Across America Day,
and many schools have continued to hold reading events throughout this
month. On Thursday, April 20, we will again celebrate the district’s
top readers, as we culminate the second year of our MCS Reads campaign
with a special event at the Redbirds game that evening.

Craigmont
Senior One of 20 to Land Prestigious National Scholarship
Craigmont High
graduating senior Adam D. Haliburton has been named a Ron Brown Scholar,
winning one of only 20 national college scholarships awarded annually
by the CAP Charitable Foundation (USA) to outstanding African American
high school students. More than 7,500 students from across the country
competed for the awards, which were announced the week of March 20
in Washington, DC.

Herenton Celebrates Black History Month with Students at Sherwood
Middle
Students
at Sherwood Middle had a very distinguished visitor during the school’s
Black History Month program. Mayor Willie Herenton was the guest speaker
for the event.

Leadership Council Paves the Way for Student Achievement
A dedicated team
of teachers, parent volunteers, students and school adopters are making
great things happen at Klondike Elementary. This group calls itself
the Klondike Leadership Council, and their mission is to continually
provide new strategies and incentives to promote student achievement
and community spirit at the school.

Unveils New Transportation Information Web Site
Memphis
City Schools launched a new Web site for transportation information
on Tuesday, March 21. The site offers 24-hour public access to all
transportation-related information, including bus routes and times,
bus behavior rules, inclement weather policies and frequently asked
questions.
