Memphis City Schools Student Wins Today Show "Kid Reporter" Contest

Posted on 11/12/209

Memphis, Tenn: - Colonial Middle School student Deidra Shores was named the winner of the "Kid Reporter" contest on the Today Show. Deidra was one of four final contestants vying for the position. For their final assignment, each kid reporter hopeful traveled back to New York City where they covered the unveiling of the world's largest children's book, written by children for the children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Deidra was selected from more than 40,000 children who submitted entries to the "Kid Reporter" contest. Deidra's original submission was a parody of Matt Lauer's "Where in the World is Matt Lauer." The video had her searching for Mr. Lauer throughout the city of Memphis, stopping at various points of interest in hopes of finding him, and then landing an exclusive interview.

Deidra will begin her Today Show "Kid Reporter" career on Monday, November 16, while on a 6-day cruise on Carnival Cruise Line's newest ship, "The Carnival Dream". The trip is one of several prizes she received as the winner of the contest.

Posted on 10/29/09

Memphis, Tenn: - Colonial Middle School student Deidra Shores has advanced to the final round in the "Kid Reporter" contest on the Today Show.

Deidra appeared with four semi-final contestants on the Today Show this morning. All kid reporter hopefuls were required to submit a "reporter" video. Deidra's submission was a parody of Matt Lauer's "Where in the World is Matt Lauer." The video had her searching for Mr. Lauer throughout the city of Memphis, stopping at various points of interest in hopes of finding him, and then landing an exclusive interview.

During round three of the semi-finals, when asked why she submitted a "Where in the World…" parody, Deidra told Natalie Morales, "Matt is a very unique and very cool type of person. He gets to play hide and seek around the world and gets paid for it, so I want to do that." Amid great laughter from Morales and Al Roker, Deidra continued, "I want to know where is there a permission slip or something where I can do that?"

Deidra now moves on the final round, which will air on Thursday, November 5.
