Scholars’ Forum: Urban Education as a Pathway to Social Justice
The scholars will demonstrate how they use research in urban education in both traditional ways to inform
knowledge about educational policy and practice, but also in nontraditional ways to advance social justice. They
will address how research in urban education must be relevant to the democratic practice of questioning and
challenging social inequities. Further they will illustrate how research can be used to eliminate social injustice
when it is driven by local data, interests, needs and fault lines. This discussion will include how research should be
collaboratively driven (e.g., with district leaders, researchers, and community members, and students) with a laser
sharp focus on real local concerns and with an action agenda to create communities that assure educational equity
and achievement for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, race, gender or ability levels.
