Principals as Instructional Leaders: Four Tools to Effectively Monitor Teaching, Learning and Student
Performance
Effective principals are instructional leaders who have developed their own systems for monitoring teacher and
student performance. They improve their schools by looking beyond and behind the test scores to address the
needs of teachers and students in the “Age of Accountability”. This presentation is designed to: 1) define
instructional monitoring, and 2) provide principals and assistant principals with knowledge, practical strategies and
four tools that can immediately be used to monitor the teaching‐learning process in the "big picture" of continuous
school improvement and student achievement.

Mentoring as Collaboration: Lessons from the Field for Classroom, School and District Leaders
Mentoring as Collaboration is an advocated program for teacher mentoring for all TN schools and districts and is
shared through TN Academy for School Leaders (TASL) by the TN State Department of Education. One unique
feature is a school‐based leadership team including an administrator and teacher leaders who are responsible for
all mentoring relationships and activities. The program was originally designed 10 years ago for urban schools and
high need schools in TN, but rapidly expanded to all school settings. The presentation will address the program
outcomes achieved and practical, “how to” implementation guidelines to ensure an effective collaborative teacher
mentor program.

Helping Principals and Teachers Manage Data: Grad Plans, T Plans and RTI
The Public Consulting Group will present an update on the ED Plan implementation currently in progress with
Memphis City Schools including a more general discussion of the RTI consulting services it is providing, perspective
on making RTI successful at the district level, and the increasing interest in personal learning plans and
corresponding need for a system to manage intervention information. The Memphis ED Plan project builds on
existing Easy IEP technology to support electronic Graduation Plans, 504 Plans, and Response to Intervention
identification, planning, measuring and reporting.

Coordinated School Health: Making and Keeping Schools Healthy
The Coordinated School Health model consists of eight interactive components which include health education,
physical activity and physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, psychological, and social
services, healthy school environment, staff wellness, family and community involvement. Schools provide a critical
facility in which many community partners work together to maintain the well‐being of young people. There will

intersection of two dimensions: core components created through key processes. Core components refer to
characteristics of schools that support the learning of students and enhance the ability of teachers to teach. Key
