Data Drives Instruction
This workshop will review best practices for data disaggregation aimed to adjust and evaluate instruction and
student mastery. Identifying problem areas through data disaggregation and strategically planning interventions is
an essential ingredient in high performing schools. Building administrators will learn ways to lead teams through
data analysis and be given concrete examples of drilling down to comprehensively dissect the instructional
program, student data and school initiatives.

The Disenfranchisement of African American Males: Analysis of an American Tradition
This session provides empathy training on the plight of systemic destruction on black males, statistics on the
impact of poverty and its "trickle down" effect on our city's low SES emographic, strategies and solutions for
permanent change in our city. Learn more about Emotional Intelligence and the Z‐theory of management for the
homeostasis of school, community and church and the relationship to schools. Participants will gain an
understanding through an interactive dialogue on this plight that plagues all urban school districts.

How to Handle the Stress of Leading a School
School‐wide programs often become ineffective because school leaders are preoccupied with difficult teachers,
students, and/or parents. (There could be a combination of all three). This session will provide practical tips for
principals in managing teachers, parents and students. It will provide strategies and anecdotal stories about real
situations that invariably increase the stress level of principals. The session will target novice principals, however,
veteran principals will add to the knowledge base and diversity of the group.

perspective.

School Law: A Conversation with Dr. Nathan Essex
This session is a conversation with Dr. Nathan Essex regarding legal issues that impact schools and the legal
environment of schools. These issues include IDEA 2004, school uniforms, school vouchers, charter schools, zero
tolerance, school gangs, pagers and cell phones, use of metal detectors, internet use, No Child Left Behind,
intellectual property and sexual harassment. Educators can develop awareness of and alertness to legal risks and
responsibilities, problems and use of legal counsel.

Participants will work within interactive groups to identify the essential school programs that foster student

Appreciative Inquiry I: Change That Energizes
Are you interested in bringing about change that creates energy rather than raises fears and resistance?
Appreciative Inquiry is a proven approach to organizational and community change. It focuses on the strengths
that already exist in the system. Throughout the world, appreciative inquiry has been the basis for substantial
change in schools and community development in a range of prosperous to very economically deprived
environments. A hands‐on learning experience will be used to demonstrate the positive results when building on
strengths.

Engaging Students in the PLC: Test and Talk, Where Are We Now
Come and take a journey with a two time EPIC Award winning principal and Leadership Coach as they introduce
you to Assessment for Learning Research and show you practical proven strategies that have worked in MCS to
drive students to dramatic gains. Tamika has used Test ‘N’ Talk (TNT) in her building to engage students in the PLC
process and to inform and diagnose the teachers’ instruction so that their work is intentional and directly aligned
with the students needs. Terry has done extensive work with Dr. Rick Stiggins research around Assessment for
Learning which helps teachers understand the relationship between student assessment and student motivation
and craft assessment experiences to maximize student motivation.
