Promoting Pre‐K Math and Science Using the Tennessee Early Learning Developmental Standards
How we engage children in early literacy is as important as how frequently we engage them. Basic activities and
routines afford opportunities for interactions with Pre‐K children to introduce math and science concepts through
literacy rich environments. We know that young children learn best when they are actively involved. Reading with
young children can be as much about having a conversation about the book as it is to read the printed page. In this
session participants explore ways to integrate the Tennessee Early Learning Developmental Standards into life
experiences, discoveries, and play and to understand the significance of these experiences to children’s
development.

Exploring Safety Nets to Enhance Student Achievement
A strong academic foundation is essential in nurturing and preparing students for academic success. Research
suggests schools that provide students with various learning opportunities that incorporate effective safety nets
are more successful in enhancing student performance. Given this research, how do we prepare students to reach
standards and expectations that will continue to increase with the growth of our society? How can schools meet
rigorous standards and continue to encourage students to embrace lifelong learning? This session will highlight
opportunities to provide enrichment and intervention strategies that increase academic achievement.

Giving School Staff “PATS” To Ensure “Best Practice” Coaching Consistency for Critical School Processes within
Schools Throughout The District
The best trainers are not outside consultants or training specialists. The best trainers are the people who have the
most experience and understanding of every aspect of your school and district, and they are already on the job.
This session will provide the “Nuts and Bolts” of how a team of Professional Development School Compliance
Coaches (PDSCC's) formerly known Instructional Facilitators, incorporated the use of a process improvement and
formalized On‐the‐Job Training (OJT) System known as the Process Activated Training ® (PATS), to identify and
flowchart key coaching practices and to ultimately develop OJT Training Scripts, that are password protected and
loaded onto the Memphis City School’s website for all PDSCC's to download and use to ensure process consistency
among “Best Coaching” practices throughout the district.

The Culture of Violence in Secondary Education
The culture of violence addresses the social history of violence in the United States. From the founding of America
to the present, violence has been an expression of the country’s inability to peacefully solve problems. The culture
of violence that our country has created affects adolescent behavior. Adolescent psychologists and
anthropologists have sought to understand why adolescent violence has become so common across the country in
secondary schools. Oscar Lewis, an acclaimed anthropologist introduced this concept to describe urban violence.
