Welcome
to the School Counseling Department!
The Alternative Programs Counseling Department offers a comprehensive school
counseling program that focuses on three developmental areas: academic,
personal/social, and career. Students receive services that address these
areas through the use of a school counseling curriculum (based on guidelines
of the Tennessee Department of
Education), individual counseling, classroom guidance/group sessions,
parental support, transition services, consultation, community outreach,
and other activities.
School Counseling Curriculum
The counselors establish goals and strategies based on standards comprised
by the Tennessee Department of Education and the American School Counseling
Association. These goals are implemented through cooperative learning activities
with behavior specialists and teachers, group guidance, service learning
projects, and other services.
Classroom Guidance/Group Counseling
The counselors schedule group sessions, similar to that of the behavior
specialists, to discuss topics related to student development, character
education, and other topics based on students’ needs.
Individual Counseling
The counselors may meet with students on an individual basis to discuss
personal issues as well. Individual sessions may be arranged through referrals
from administration, teachers, behavior specialists, parents/guardians,
and/or by student request.
Referrals/Responsive Services
The counselors also assist parents and students in connecting with outside
agencies and community events. This includes services within the Memphis
City School system and community agencies.
Consultation
The counselors consult with the administrators, teachers, and behavior
specialists to help students reach academic achievement. The counselor
serves as a valuable agent in getting additional educational resources
and tools to assist students academically.
Parent Conferences
The counselors also work in conjunction with parents through parent teacher
conferences, parent support group activities, conference calls, and other
events.
Parent Resource Center
At Alternative Programs, we highly value the support and concern of our
parents and guardians. Alternative
Programs offers support for our parents through the Parent ResourceCenter.
This center has a diverse selection of handouts, booklets, videos, and
other materials designed to assist our parents in supporting our students
toward success. |
