Coach Gaston

Bellevue Junior High's football achieved more in less this season. The Bobcats, along with other MIAA junior highs, played a six-game regular season instead of eight due to budget restraints according to Bellevue coach Rodrick Gaston. Bellevue, the 2002 junior high city champions, still had sights set on repeating. Gaston said he knew his team hd potential to win a second title despite schedule adjustments. "Half of my team came back from last season so anything less wouldn't have been accepted," Gaston said. "Our number one goal was to win the city." Gaston found obstacles nontheless. He added several knew players to his roster and had to get the acclimated to a new level of competition in a short season. He said preseason planning and extra effort at practice was a large help in maturing his younger players. "We set up some scrimmages early on," Gaston said. "We also used some weekends to practice." The practice games showed Gaston that he indeed had the talent to win city honors again he said. "We scrimmaged some junior varsity teams and beat them."

Gaston said he saw the potential to repeat as city champions from the scrimmages. He knew there would still have to be other pieces to fit into place, though. "We had guys who had just started to play," Gaston said. "A lot of seventh-graders had to step up and play valuable time." That happened for Bellevue, which led to a 6-0 record at the season's end.

The Bobcats won two playoff games that included the 14-6 city championship victory over Georgian Hills at the Fairgrounds. Gaston credited the leadership of his veteran players for his team's response to the changes it endured from last season. Freshman wide reciever Jerome Fields, the team's go-to guy according to Gaston, played a large role this season. After learning a position and getting comfortable his first two seasons, Fields had to change jobs for this team.
