THIS WEEK’S WINNER

Janeese, a senior, is a top student who has made significant contributions to the success of the school's vocal music program. She has been a dedicated member of the Concert Singers for three years and the Women's Choir, Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir for two years. She is dependable and demonstrates the desire and stamina to meet the demanding practice schedule of each of these groups. As a student in the college preparatory optional program, Janeese has maintained a spot in the top 20 percent of the class while taking Advanced Placement courses.

She holds a 3.799 weighted grade point average and scored 26 on the ACT. The Concert Singers were selected to perform with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra during a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. at the Cannon Center last year. Janeese will perform in a solo concert in Lincoln Center in New York on March 17. She was selected for this honor after an appearance in Miami at The American Choral Directors' National Convention. Central High School is one of 40 ensembles selected to perform there. Janeese is a two-time member of the All-Southwest Tennessee Honors Choir and first chair in the Central Women's Choir.

Janeese was chosen as an intern at Rhodes College on the Crossroads to Freedom Project last summer. During that program, she interacted with many leaders from around the Mid-South and gained a deeper insight into the history of the Civil Rights Movement in this area. She also has been selected to receive a Presidential Scholarship from Kentucky State University. It pays for tuition, room and board and books. Janeese is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in its tutoring program. She volunteers for the Food not Bombs Program, which serves the needy. She is vice president of the Ladies of Roses mentoring program and was chosen by this group as a recipient of the Do the Right Thing Award.
