Family Engagement Plan

Parental involement provides active participation of parents in the education of their child-children. Our parental Involvement policy at Coleman was incorporated jointly with our parents. Our goal is to prepare parents to be knowledgeable of the skills and information needed to help their children to be successful in school.

Coleman School pledges to eliminate barriers to parental involement in the following ways:

1. Consistently acknowledge and greet parents in a friendly and welcome manner, by office staff, when visiting the school.

2. Provide meetings at various times that allow all parents to participate.

3. Clarify terms using simple and direct language.

4. Have written materials printed with English and Spanish.

5. Provide interpreter services when necessary.

6. Provide WEB site information and e-mail addresses.

7. To express ideas, concerns, and suggestions and to receive a timely response.

8. Continue to have daily dialogue throughout the school to ensure success for all students (Staff and Support Staff).

9. Develop jointly with parents a school/parent compact and engagement plan.

10. Parents are provided an opportunity to communicate concerns/problems with principal.

Coleman will encourage parents to become meaningfully involved and promote the capacity for strong parental involvement in the following ways:

1. To participate on the School Leadership Council, PTO, WATCH DOGS.

2. To attend and participate in conferences, workshops and instructional activities to educate parents on the curriculum and assessments surrounding their children's education.

3. Conduct regular and flexible parent meetings to keep parents informed of current events and issues, timely progreess reports and parents and parent/teacher conferences to discuss the child's progress.

4. Convene an annual meeting, at flexible times and invite all parents, to explain and observe Title I NCLB programs, activities and curriculum.

5. Provide Family Literacy and family services to improve parents' ability to help with their child's education.

6. Provide and information board of current events with a montly calendar to inform parents of school activities; receive notices and communications timely, in order to respond and/or participate.

7. Provide a parent and student handbook covering school rules, polices and procedures.

8. Parents will participate in revising the Family Engagement Plan and the School Compact, sign and receive a copy of both at the begiing of the school year.

9. Utilize partnerships with community organizations, adopters and businesses.

10. Inform parents of curriculum, academic assessments and proficiency levels.

The compact has been jointly developed and agreed upon by school, parents, students, and school staff.

 

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITY

I, the undersigned partner in the education of children at Coleman, commit to the following:

  • Provide a safe environment that encourages positive communication between the teacher, parent and student.
  • Stress to teachers the importance of providing regular homework assignemetns to reinforce classroom instruction.
  • Monitor and applaud attendance of students and teachers.
  • Ensure implementation of a strong academic program based on Balanced Literacy Components.
  • Provide parent activities to support our instructional program and enhance student academic achievement.
  • Provide opportunities for parents to have reasonable access to staff, to volunteer, and to participate and observe in their child's class.
  • Hold annual parent/teacher conferences to discuss the parent-school compact and to discuss how it relates to their child's achievements.

STUDENT'S AGREEMENT

I shall strive to do the following to the best of my ability:

-- Wear uniforms everyday.
-- Follow the Student Rules of Conduct.
-- Complete and return homework assignments.
-- Come to school everyday with supplies needed for classroom work.
-- Attend school daily and complete classroom assignments.

TEACHER'S AGREEMENT

I, the undersigned partner in the education of children at Coleman commit to the following:

-- Provide weekly progress reports and communication regarding student progress.
-- Provide homework that reinforces skills taught in the classroom.
-- Provide a welcoming, developmentally appropriate atmosphere that is conducive to learning.
-- Provide on-going communication with parents through: lesson line, weekly folders, newsletters and telephone contact.
--Continue to strive to meet and accommodate the needs of each student.
-- Focus on enriched skills to promote academic growth towards TCAP and middle school readiness.
-- Dedicate my time to quality professional development to gain knowledge and skills which will ensure student achievement.

PARENT'S AGREEMENT

I, the undersigned partner in the education of my child commit to the following:

-- Help my child/children to get to school on time and to attend daily.
-- Provide a study place, reviewing my child's homework and other papers on a regular basis.
-- Work cooperatively with the school to maintain proper discipline.
-- Encourage my child's efforts and being available for questions and support.
-- Dress my child in a uniform each day.
-- Provide a safe and loving environment and being a positive role model.
-- Provide supplies and necessary materials for school.
-- Return report cards/attending parent teacher conferences.
-- Assist my child in getting a library card.
