Unit Title: "A Journey Into Make
Believe": The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Grade Levels: 4-8
Unit Theme: Writing Across the Curriculum
Subject Areas: Language Arts, Social Studies, History
Rationale:
Students will enjoy a journey into make believe as they read the classic book, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Students will be encouraged to excel to one's fullest potential while completing activities promoting friendship through character and offering moral guidance.
Unit Overview:
This unit is designed to be used in sequence, as students read the book. It is suggested that students complete the activities in order; however, teachers may choose to only incorporate select activities into their curriculum. Students will complete prereading activities as they research to discover more about the life and writings of C. S. Lewis. Students will be given vocabulary words for each section of the book with various activities to increase vocabulary retention. Students will design a "Journal" to record thoughts, hopes and fantasies as they are discovered reading the story. After each chapter, students will go online to answer comprehension questions. After studying an online map of Narnia, students will construct a map detailing Narnia as they see it and add it to the journal. Students will research a list of leaders online to discover their reputation as a leader. After reading the book, students will submit individual written reports which can be posted online, and make individual oral presentations. Each group will make character sketches of the main characters and discuss the reputation of each character. Then groups will discuss and write a character sketch describing an ideal friend. To conclude the unit, each group will prepare a multimedia presentation.

Lesson 7: Written Report and Oral Presentation with a Visual
Unit Title: "A Journey Into Make Believe": The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Grade Level: 4-8
Standards:
1. Improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing,
synthesizing, and evaluating written text.
2. Write frequently for a variety of purposes.
3. Continue to respond actively and imaginatively to literature.
Materials:
Notebook paper
Word processor
Tasks:
Each student will turn in a written book report. The report is
to be one to one and a half pages in length. Write only on the
front of the page. Regular lined notebook paper is to be used.
Use a black pen or a word processor. The title of the book should
be centered on the top line of the front page. Your name should
be written in the upper right corner of each page. Book titles
are always underlined. The first word and all other important
words are capitalized. The author's name should be written under
the title of the book. The report should be in your best
handwriting if you are not using a word processor.
The first paragraph will be an introductory type paragraph in
which the student will attempt to convince the reader that the
book he/she read was an excellent one. He will tell what awards,
if any, it has won, how many copies have been sold, and who would
enjoy reading it.
The second paragraph should briefly describe both the setting and
not more than three to six main characters.
The third paragraph is to be a summary of the story. However, do
not tell the ending or any surprises.
The last paragraph should be your opinion of the book. You might
mention such things as how the author created suspense or
developed characters with whom readers of a particular type or
age can identify. You might comment on why the book won an award
or sold so many copies. You need to think deeply about why you
enjoyed the book and write a very good concluding paragraph.
The first and last paragraphs should be especially good, because
it is in the introduction and the conclusion that you will
actually "sell" the reader on your book.
Students will also make an oral presentation using a visual that
they have created. The visual may be a drawing which represents a
particularly interesting part of the book, a promotional poster
or pamphlet advertising the book, a model of how they view
"Narnia", a multi-media presentation, or another
creative idea approved by the teacher.
Evaluation:
Students will receive an evaluation for the written
presentations based upon how well they followed the written
directions. Students will receive a grade for the oral
presentation based upon its creativity and the delivery of the
presentation.

After the battle with the White Witch, the four children became leaders with good reputations. Peter, a great warrior, was called Peter the Magnificent; Lucy became known as Queen Lucy the Valiant; Susan was known as Queen Susan the Gentle; and Edmund became a great counselor-Edmund the Just.
