CHARACTER EDUCATION ZONE (CCZ)

Cordova Elementary School is a Character Construction Zone!  Here we build character, one student at a time, in a safe and nurturing environment. What is a Character Construction Zone?  CCZ is a parental involvement character education program. The foundation of the program consists of literature-based classroom presentations. Built on this foundation are the bricks of honesty, respect, responsibility, kindness, courage and perseverance.

What holds these bricks together? What is the mortar in CCZ? Our parents! Our parent volunteers make up the mortar that holds our program together! Anyone who enjoys reading to children and can share an hour of his or her time is encouraged to become a volunteer. The presentations, six in all, are foolproof, easy and fun!

If you are interested in CCZ please contact Sadia Rana, CCZ chair at 901-759-9179.

CULTURAL ARTS

This committee offers several opportunities for students to express themselves through the arts. Many of the programs allow parents to participate in and out of the classroom. "Arts in the Classroom- The BE SMART INCLUDE ART program is a mini art history lesson that uses parent volunteers. Working moms and dads love this program because it only takes 45 minutes. Many parents are able to participate during their lunch hour. Volunteers read a short book about an artist, ask questions about the artist (questions provided) and explain an art project for the children to complete. You may volunteer once or as many times as you would like.

The "Reflections Art Contest program provides a venue for students to create and be recognized for original works of art based on a pre-selected theme. Students are eligible to submit entries in the art areas of literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts. Look for this in December.  The 2008-2009 Theme is "Wow!".

If you are interested in Cultural Arts, please contact Cathleen Triplett, Cultural Arts chair at 901-756-1709

SAFETY COMMITTEE

The role of the Safety Committee is to work with parents, teachers, and the school staff to promote safety at home, in school and in the community. We will continue to promote the National Walk to School Week, Fire Safety Week, School Bus Safety Week, and Bicycle Safety Month.  Our D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) help every school morning to make sure that all children dropped off make it into the school safely by opening car doors and directing traffic.

FAMILY LIFE COMMITTEE

The role of the Family Life Committee is to serve the needs of the families and children of Cordova Elementary by presenting General Assembly Meetings that will address topics we face every day with our kids. If there are any needs in which the Family Life Committee may assist you, or if you would like to participate and you would like to volunteer or chair this committee please contact Marnie Williams at

PARENT TEACHER CO-OP COMMITTEE

The primary purpose of our committee is to organize and assist our Room Parents, and passing information on from the PTA and school regarding school events. Room Parents are responsible for planning their class' room parties.  It is so important to be involved in our child's school and in their classroom. We will be looking for lots of helping hands!  If you would like to help in any way please contact Kathy Flynn.

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The Public Relations Committee informs the school's students, parents, school personnel, and the surrounding community about the achievements and day to day activities taking place at CES through The PawPrints, the PTA school newsletter, is published five times a year and distributed with the student's report cards.

The Public Relations Committee also strives to keep our school and surrounding community informed about Cordova Elementary School's achievements and pertinent news through submissions to local newspapers and media.

We are always looking for better ways to serve Cordova Elementary, its students, parents, school personnel, surrounding community and its constituents and appreciate any comments and/or suggestions to help us improve. If you would like to help in any way or if you would like more information please contact Kim Dancy.

WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE

We want to thank all the parents and students who supported our various fundraising activities. We are starting a new year and hope you will continue to support the different fundraising projects we have to offer, such as the Kroger Gift Card Program. Did you know that when you use your Kroger Gift Card the PTA earns 5% of the money? If 100 families spend $50 a month the PTA would earn $250 each month! Use the Kroger card for groceries, prescriptions, stamps, whatever Kroger sells. If you would like to purchase a preloaded $5 Kroger gift card for $5 please contact a member of the PTA. Please remember these fundraising activities allow the PTA to provide the funds for supplies and materials throughout the school. The PTA is also the source of funding for the new Peaceful Playground found in the north parking lot. Please support the PTA fundraisers so that the PTA can continue to help enhance our children's education at Cordova Elementary School.

The CES Yearbook Committee is excited about the 2008-2009 yearbook. In order to have a great yearbook, we have to have pictures, YOUR PICTURES. We need pictures of any school event, club activity, field trip, etc. Please include: Your name, the name of the event, the children's names, teacher name and date. You may email your digital photos to CES_YEARBOOK@YAHOO.COM or place copies (labeled "yearbook") in our PTA mailbox. All labeled pictures will be returned.
