Crump Science Update
Once again Crump had the privilege of having the
Starlight Program for the 5th grade students.

Fifth Graders Were Treated To
A Tour Around The Universe
Mrs. Karen Bell and Mrs. Lisa Rightmire, graduate students of Astronomy from the University of Memphis presented the
"Starlight Program" to a group of fifth grade students.
Students held diffraction gratings in front of their eyes to observe the spectrum pattern of light from different gases like Neon, Krypton, Mercury, and Hydrogen. They drew the patterns they saw on a worksheet that became their code breaker.

Crump Students Love Science

Because Ms Srinivasen Makes It FUN!
Then they compared the patterns with the actual spectrum of a star and determined which of their code breaker patterns best resembled the starlight pattern.
Students were able to identify from the pattern that the stars
are made of hydrogen gas. During the program, students were
excited to see different color patterns of different gases.
Students were fascinated to study about stars.

Science Class Is Facinating
At the end of the program, fifth grade students asked brain stimulating questions about space objects. We thank Dr. Schmelz, Department of Physics, University of Memphis for presenting the "Starlight Program" to our Crump students.
