Mathematical Minds (DM3), offers students a world-class education with an emphasis on mathematics. Since mathematics skills are critical in helping prepare students to master other important academic skills, students enrolled in Cummings' DM3 program are prepared to succeed by focusing on developing mathematics skills and integrating them into other areas of the curriculum.

This mission is facilitated by Cummings teachers' participation in the state's Strengthening Instruction in Tennessee Elementary Schools - focusing on Mathematics (SITES-M) teacher training program. Through this program, teachers became equipped to help students build a firm foundation in mathematics, preparing them for success in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Cummings also serves as a laboratory school for LeMoyne-Owen College. A Center for Urban Education (CUE) project was established, enabling innovative teaching and learning strategies to be developed and implemented at Cummings and provide students with an innovative learning environment.
