Mission

Douglass Elementary will strive towards educational excellence in reading, writing and math to become successful citizen.

 Vision

Douglass’ students will develop the knowledge and skills to become competent thinkers, problem solvers, decision makers and communicators who are exposed to a highly qualified academic experience.

Beliefs

Learning

  • All children learn, achieve and succeed in different ways.
  • Teachers and parents have the obligation to hold high expectations for achievement of all students.
  • Every child should experience daily academic success in a safe, positive, and challenging environment.
  • Parental support and encouragement have a large impact on student achievement and success.
  • The child shares the responsibility for learning.

  Instruction

  • Teachers are responsible for facilitating learning to higher level thinking through varied appropriate instructional strategies for individual children.
  • Real life situations must be presented to children as learning connections through experiments, projects, and classroom activities.
  • Children must be taught to understand thinking processes if they are to become problem solvers.

 Assessment

  • We believe in monitoring each child’s progress through regularly scheduled, appropriate, and varied types of assessment.
  • Assessment must be aligned with learning expectations and teaching strategies.

Decision Making

  • Shared decision making among all stakeholders promotes growth and strength
  • Teachers and students share the responsibility for daily classroom success.

 Policy

  • Students, parents and community members should be involved in decision and policy making at the school.
  • All stakeholders must support the policies of the Douglass Elementary, Memphis City Schools’ district and the state of Tennessee if we are to reach maximum potential.
